BENZIMIDAZOLE FOR SYNTHESIS
Benzimidazole is a heterocyclic aromatic organic compound. This bicyclic compound consists of the
fusion of benzene and imidazole. It is a colorless solid.
The benzimidazoles are a large chemical family used to treat nematode and trematode infections in domestic animals. They also have limited activity against cestodes.
The synthesized benzimidazoles compounds were prepared from the condensation reaction between o-Phenylenediamine and various carbonyl compounds, in the presence of ammonium chloride as a catalyst. The yield of all benzimidazole derivatives was found to be in the range of 75 – 94%.
Benzimidazole and its derivatives are regarded as an important heterocyclic motif that exhibits a wide range of pharmaceutical applications including anticancers, antihypertensives, antivirals, antifungals, anti-HIVs, anti-convulsants, and anti-diabetics.
