Benzoyl chloride, also known as benzenecarbonyl chloride, is an organochlorine compound with the formula CHClO. It is a colourless, fuming liquid with an irritating odour.
The most important application of benzoyl chloride is the production of benzoyl peroxide, that is used as initiator in the polymer industry. It is also used as precursor for benzophenone, in the pharmaceutical industry and as precursor of agro-chemicals.
Benzyl chloride also reacts readily with metallic magnesium to produce a Grignard reagent.
