POTASSIUM IODATE AR
May cause severe irritation and possible burns. Ingestion: May cause burns to the gastrointestinal tract. May cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, possibly with blood. Inhalation: May cause acute pulmonary edema, asphyxia, chemical pneumonitis, and upper airway obstruction caused by edema.
Potassium Iodate tablets are used at the time of a nuclear emergency; the tablets stop the thyroid gland (situated in your neck) taking up radioactive iodine, which may be released into the environment following a nuclear accident. Radioactive Iodine is harmful and especially dangerous to babies and children.
Potassium iodate is an oxidising agent and as such it can cause fires if in contact with combustible materials or reducing agents.
